The distribution of heavy metals in the bottom mud was studied in the Rivers Namari and Hazama, both of which receive mine drainage of zinc and lead. Water and mud samples were collected in July 1972.
In the bottom mud obtained from the River Namari, Zn, Pb and As were found in very high concentrations, which became decreased at about 5 km lower point from the inflow of drainage. The relationship between Pb and As was observed in the bottom mud of this region.
As far as the mud samples were separated with screens of several meshes, the finest mud particles contained As, Cd and Pb in the highest concentrations. Zn showed the highest concentration in medium fine particles, while no remarkable relationship was observed between the concentration of Cu and the size of mud particles.
Zn, Cu and Pb were found in about 90% of relatively large particles of mud screened below 60 mesh, while As was seen only 20-30% of the mud obtained through 60-250 meshes.
