The distributional ecology of freshwater planarians in Southwest Japan was studied chiefly in our team. The knowledge is however scanty concerning the distribution of planarians of mountainous districts in the Chûgoku Mountains as well as in the southern part of the Hakusan Volcanic Zone except for the Mt. Daisen and the Mt. Sambe districts (see Fig. 1). In the present paper, the vertical distribution of freshwater planarians in the mountainous districts of the northern part of the Kinki Region and the Chûgoku Region, Honshû, are described together with some fragmental records about the distribution of planarians reported by several workers. Both the Chûgoku Mountains and the Hakusan Volcanic Zone are the backbone of the northern part of the Kinki Region and the Chûgoku Region. The Chûgoku Mountains are rather low mountains (about 1000 metres or more in altitude). The Hakusan Volcanic Zone is situated at the north side of the Chûgoku Mountains. Two extinct volcanoes, Mt. Hyô-no-sen (1510 metres above sea level) and Mt. Daisen (1713 metres above sea level), are the main peaks in the mountains. The majority of the surveys was made in September-November, 1968.
Two species of freshwater planarians, Dugesia japonica ICHIKAWA et KAWAKATSU and Phagocata vivida (IJIMA et KABURAKI), were found in the area surveyed. D. japonica (J) was common at the stations below the altitude of about 1160 metres in the Chûgoku Mountains. Ph. vivida (V) was also common at the cold-water stations in the Chûgoku Mountains. In the north side of the mountains (the San'in district), this species was found at the stations within the altitude range from about 500 to 1450 metres. In some cases this species was also found in the coldwater springs and spring-fed streams in the plains (including the data of KABURAKI 1922 a, b, 1936 and NISHIMURA 1957, 1959 a, b). In the south side of the mountains (the Sanyô district), the altitude of the lower limit of distribution of this species was about 1000 metres. The type of the vertical distribution in the Chûgoku Mountains is shown as J-JV-V.
