The pollution of the Ina-gawa and the Muko-gawa rivers and its influence to the fauna

The authors researched the pollution and its effect to the fauna in the Ina-gawa and the Muko-gawa rivers which run in parallel from north to south in the Settsu District (belongs to the parts of Osaka and Hyôgo Prefectures). They have similar water and fauna, but have recently been polluted by the inflows of the drainage from springs, towns and industries along these rivers. Accordingly the water quality and the standing crops of the algae, the benthos and fishes were studied at 10 or 11 stations in each river. Then the relation between the degrees of pollution and the species or the biomass of algae, benthic animals and fishes were discussed in detail.<BR>Especially the water of the Ina-gawa River has been contaminated by the butchery and the leather factories through a tributary, the Saimyoji-gawa, in Kawanishi City and by the polluted water from some industries through a tributary, the Daroku-gawa, in Itami City. The Muko-gawa River has been very much polluted by the drainage from the titanium factory at Dôjô. These polluted waters do not allow benthos and fishes to inhabit there and the influence of the pollution reaches the lower courses of the rivers.<BR>As the river water is contaminated by the organic matter such as the domestic drainage, rather intolerant fishes such as <I>Plecoglossus altivelis, Zacco temmincki, Tukugobius fulumineus</I> and others generally decrease, but <I>Zacco platypus, Carassius carassius</I> and others owing to their higher tolerance to the pollution. In the lower reaches of the Muko-gawa River, <I>Plecoglossus altivelis, Anguilla japonica</I> and <I>Rhinogobius brunneus</I> were found, therefore it seems that these diadromous fishes are admitted to swim up from the sea. But in the Ina-gawa River they are never found. Perhaps they must be prevented to swim up by the violent pollution of the Kanzaki-gawa River into which the Ina-gawa River flows.
