The benthic diatom vegetation in the brackish water area of the River Tama near Tokyo was studied during a period from the fall of 1946 to the early summer of 1947. Pools on the dried bed of the river supported the <I>Amphiprora paludosa-Synedra pulchella</I> association, while the running water part was represented by the <I>Gyrosigma fasciola-Melosira nummuloides-Coscinodiscus lacustris</I> association. The change of the dominant species from upper to lower course of the river was <I>Coscinodiscus→Melosira→Gyrosigma</I> in succession,
