The present paper deals with the results of an electron-microscopical study on the fine structure of mitochondria in Paramecium carried out by means of ultra-thin sections.
The mitochondria lying under the pellicle and those scattered in the cytoplasm show the same inner structure. Each mitochondrion is surrounded by an outer membrane. In addition a membranous fold-or plica-structure can be seen in the interior of mitochondria. Their internal plica-structure has not always the same appearance ; it is sometimes indistinct or it exhibits a net-like structure. Judging from our observations on many thin sedtions of mitochondria in Paramecium, their internal structure seems to vary according to the phase of their physiological function.
It is assumed that mitochondria in the ectoplasm have some relation to the formation of trichocysts ; they may be also related to the energy source for ciliary movement. Further studies, however, are required in this respect.
