Preferential ammoniacal leaching of Co, Ni and Cu from cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust under reducing conditions was performed using glucose as reducing agent. The effects of reducing agent concentration, initial pH, leaching time, temperature and ammonium salt on the extraction of Co, Ni, Cu, Mn and Fe were investigated.<BR>When ammonium sulfate was used as ammonium salt, the high extraction of Co, Ni and Cu could be obtained under the conditions of initial pH 10-10.5, leaching time 60-90 min, temperature 70-80°C and glucose/crust> 2.5 (g/g). Meanwhile, when ammonium carbonate was used as ammonium salt, the high extraction of Co, Ni and Cu could be obtained under the following leaching conditions: initial pH 10-10.5, leaching time > 60 min, temperature ca. 70°C, ammonium carbonate ca. 100g/l and glucose/crust ca. 2.5 (g/g). Ammonium carbonate is superior as ammonium salt for the preferential extraction of Co, Ni and Cu to ammonium sulfate.
