Considerations were given to the oxidized products of deep sea deposits from Central Pacific Basin. The oxidized products were found to have potential characteristics as gas absorbents and ceramic aggregates.
The component minerals of deep sea deposits are quartz, feldspars, illite and montmorillonite. Radiolarias and diatoms were also found by microscopic observation.
Basic oxides are extracted by processing with hydrochloric acid solution, by which increased specific surface area and activated feature were resulted. The activated surface showed good gas absorbing capacity. Intergranular sintering took place when compacts of deposit were heated at about 500°C, and showed tendency of shrinkage and vitrification following the rise of temperature higher than 500°C. Gas, which was generated during vitrification is enclosed in vitreous phase and cause the expansion of compacted deposits at 1, 000°C. Expanded compacts exhibited the features suitable as light aggregates.
The expansion rate of compacts of deposit, which was processed by acid, decreases because of the removal of iron and others, and the temperature of expansion shift to higher side. Consequently, the deep sea doposits are expected to have potential value as industrial resource, when it is recovered in large amount following practical excavation of manganese nodules in future.
