Bacterial Leaching of Sulfide Minerals

From seventeen centuries, the copper dissolving in acid mine drainage was recovered as the copper precipitated. It was thought that the copper in an ore was leached by the action of ferric sulfate and sulfate which produced from iron and sulfur in a sulfide minerals by the natural oxidation. It was recently proved that the bacteria in concerning with these phenomena was discovered and many kind of metals was leached by the simple chemical method and directly or indirectly in addition to bacterial action. This fact was suggested that there exist a possibility to be capable of recovery the metals by the action of these bacteria from the low grade ore or the waste dump. And then the research in this division was prosperous in many countries. In this paper, the outline of bacterial leaching was described and the problems to be solved was pointed out at the situation of microbiology and mineralogy.
