The insect pests of the cultivated soybean in Kagoshima Prefecture and notes on their infestation (Preliminary report).

Fifty-three species of insect belonging to 25 families in 6 orders and 4 species other than insects were listed as pests of the cultivated soybean in Kagoshima Prefecture. Several species of stink bug were economically most important among them on the summer-type soybean and the soybean pod gall midge, Asphondylia sp. on the autumntype. In this prefecture, the summer-type soybean had been more commonly cultivated than the autumn-type about 30 years ago (ITOGA and YAMASHITA, 1950), but the present study indicated that the cultivation of the summer-type soybean becomes more difficult than that of autumn-type due to the different patterns of serious occurrence of the insect pests. In order to determine whether the situation of infestation by the insect pests is fixed or transitional, further experiments and investigations are necessary.
