Acute ruptures of the lateral ligaments of the ankle in 14 patients were treated surgically. The patients were diagnosed and evaluated by the talar tilt angle and the anterior talar translation measured on stress X-ray before operation and more than six months later. All patients returned to resume full sports activities and had improved mechanical stability of the ankle on a follow up examination. However, in five patients both the talar tilt angle and the anterior talar translation were lesser than that seen on the contralateral (normal, uninjured) side. All but one of the five patients complained of stiffness in the ankle joint after sports activities, during cold weather spells, and during upright sitting.
