J chain-positive cell (JPC) was studied in relation to surface markers, Fc of IgG (FcR) and complement receptor (CR) in chickens. Splenic lymphocytes separated into populations which were either depleted or enriched for FcR+ or CR+ were examined for their expressions of J chain. Higher values of JPC frequencies were found in the populations of FcR+ and CR+. In contrast, FcR- and CR- populations were poor in JPC. FcR+ was rich in B lymphocyte and macrophage populations. B lymphocyte population was predominant in CR+. Macrophages were detected in part in the CR+. These findings demonstrate that many JPC have FcR or CR on their surface and suggest that the JPC is mainly distributed in B lymphocyte and macrophage populations in chickens.
