Effects of high dose supplementation of ascorbate on tissue levels of bound and free ascorbic acid in chicks.

The effects of high dietary ascorbic acid (AA) intake on the tissue levels of bound and free AA were investigated with young male White Leghorn chicks in a 2-weeks experiment.Addition of 5 or 15g AA/kg to the control diet had no appreciable effect on feed intake, whereas both body weight gain and feed efficiency of the chicks receiving supplemental AA tended to be lower than those of the control. No substantial differences were observed in liver, kidney and adrenal weights among dietary treatments.The concentrations of bound AA in blood plasma, liver, kidney and adrenal were little affected by AA supplementation. On the other hand, the levels of free AA in chicks given the AA supplemented diets were 1.2 to 1.9 times higher than those in the control group.From these results, it was found that the contents of free AA, in the tissue of chicks, were affected much greater than those of bound AA by high dietary AA intake.
