The artificial diets containing 10%, 15%, and 20% crude fiber were fed to adult male ptarmigans (Lagopus mutus japonicus) for 9 days, and the utilization of nutrients, metabolized energy and metabolizable energy of them were examined.1. No changes in body weight were observed in birds fed any diets. Dry matter intake by ptarmigans ranged from 56 to 58g per kg body wt per day in all dietary groups.2. Digestibility of dry matter was 61%, 60% and 54% in 10%, 15% and 20% crude fiber diets-fed birds, respectively.3. Digestibility of dietary crude fiber in birds fed 10%, 15% and 20% crude fiber diets were 21%, 25% and 19%, respectively.4. Birds fed 10%, 15% and 20% crude fiber diets had an intake of 539kJ, 556kJ and 554kJ per day and the metabolized energy of them were 348kJ, 349kJ and 321kJ per day, respectively. Metabolizable energy of 10%, 15% and 20% crude fiber diets were 12.33kJ, 11.96kJ and 11.01kJ per gDM, respectively.5. Nitrogen retention of dietary protein was 21%, 23% and 14% in birds fed 10%, 15% and 20% crude fiber diets, respectively.6. Neither the rate of utilization of crude fat, ranging from 84% to 87%, nor that of nitrogen-free extracts, ranging from 80% to 82%, was affected by the levels of dietary cellulose. It is concluded that maintenance requirement of adult ptarmigan (500g body weight) for ME is about 320kJ per day, and the artificial diets tested have a low digestibility of crude fiber and a low retention rate of crude protein, possibly because of the high energy and high protein contents of tested diets to ptarmigans.
