To study phylogenetical relationships of fresh water snails, Indoplanorbis exustus, I. corneas, and Biomphalaria glabrata, water-soluble proteins of whole body were analyzed using SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and two dimensional gel electrophoresis. Although SDS-PAGE did not show any clear differences of the protein composition in these three species, unique polypeptide patterns were obtained by two dimensional gel electrophoresis: two dimensional gel electrophoretic patterns showed that I. exustus and I. corneas shared most of the polypeptide spots, while many polypeptide spots of B. glabrata were different from those of the other two species. Two dimensional gel electrophoresis also revealed the presence of organ-specific polypeptides in I. exustus and the developmental change of protein composition of the whole body. One spot, supposed to be actin, was detectable in all organs and developmental stages we examined. The major polypeptide constituent of both egg and adult that had pI 5.0∼5.5 and M. W. 68, 000 were supposed to migrate from albumen gland to egg during oogenesis.
