Thyroidal I131 uptake in 4 hours in the Bengalees (Uroloncha domestica) maintained on the commercial ration for small birds and tap water was 82.5% of injected dose. The value was tremendously high compared with the uptake observed in mammals and chickens. When the birds were maintained on the same diet and water of 0.2μg% KI, I131 uptake in 4 hours by the thyroids was 25% of injected dose (Table 1.). These results show that the commercial ration is very low in iodine content. The uptake of I131 by the thyroids of the birds reached the peak at 4 hours after the injection (Table 1.). The speed of accumulation of iodine by the thyroids of the birds is remarkably faster than those of mammals and chickens. In mammals and chickens the peak is usually observed 24 hours after the injection. In the canaries maintained on the canary commercial ration and water of 0.2μg% KI, thyroidal I131 uptake in 4 hours was 23% of injected dose, and the maximum uptake was observed between 4 and 8 hours after the injection (Table 2).Progesterone injection to the Bengalees (Uroloncha domestica) decreased I131 uptake by the thyroid at 24 hours after the progesterone-treatment, increased the uptake on 6 days after the treatment, and brought no difference on 4th and 12th day after the treatment, as compared with the uptake of untreated birds (Table 2).These effects are discussed in relation to the molt induced by progestin.
