Fractionation and characterization of vacuum gas oil (b.p. 300-500°C) in petroleum oil is reported. The fractionation was performed by liquid chromatographic techniques and the adsorption of n-alkanes on molecular seives 5A. The compound-class fractions obtained were analyzed by using capillary GC and GCMS, and the structures of the major components were investigated. The contents of saturated, aromatic, and polar fractions were 54.9wt%, 39.7wt%, and 5.4wt%, respectively. Many compound types were confirmed to be present in vacuum gas oil, but anthracene, fluoranthene, biphenyl, and their methylated derivatives were present in only small amounts. Although phenanthrene and methylphenanthrenes were present in some significant amounts, their hydrogenated homologues were not detected. Benzenes and benzothiophenes with a long alkyl group and some methyl groups were present. Methyl substituents were much more predominant than ethyl and propyl ones.
