A new method for nitrogen determination by pyrolysis using steam and a FeCl3-Al2O3 catalyst was applied to the determination of total nitrogen in petroleum.The catalyst was prepared by mixing a FeCl3 aq. soln with porous active Al2O3 used for column chromatography and by drying the mixture. A sample solution of petroleum was introduced into a column packed with the FeCl3-Al2O3 catalyst to concentrate the nitrogen compounds from the bulk nonpolar hydrocarbons. The catalyst was removed from the column to a sample boat and covered with more catalyst. The sample boat was inserted into the hot zone of a pyrolysis tube, and the nitrogen compounds adsorbed on the catalyst was pyrolyzed in the presence of steam, which also acted as carrier gas. The nitrogen compounds were converted quantitatively, under optimum conditions, to ammonia by the pyrolysis reaction and the ammonia was determined using a conventional titrimetric method.The new method is simple, accurate, and applicable to a variety of petroleum distillates.
