Flurbiprofen axetil entrapped in a lipid microsphere (LFP83) is a new injectable nonsteroidal analgesic. The analgesic efficacy of the single intravenous does of LFP83 was evaluated by comparing with that of the intramuscular dose of Ketoprofen in the patients with severe postoperative pain. Two hundred and twenty-four patients were enrolled in a randomized double-blind study. The analgesic efficacy was estimated by the pain intensity at intervals over 5 hours after the injection.LFP83 was more effective than Ketoprofen in the pain relief with no significant difference. In the most of the patients, the onset of the pain relief was observed during the first 30 minutes. The analgesic efficacy in both groups lasted more than 5 hours in approximately 50% of the patients. No adverse effect was observed except the pain at the Ketoprofen injected site in one case. The overall usefulness of LFP83 was greater than that of Ketoprofen, in their percentage although there was no significant difference between two groups. These results suggested that LFP83 was clinically effective, safe and useful for the control of postoperative pain.
