Comparative studies were carried out on the endotracheal tubes of five types in regard to the penetrability and inflammability against YAG laser under the room air as well as under the mixture gas of oxygen and nitrous oxide. Three tubes were commonly available: Polar tube (Portex) which was transparent, Blue-line tube (Portex) which was semi-opaque, Ivory tube (Portex) which was opaque. Others were Defenser tube for CO2 laser (Fuji Systems) and our original tube. Including the cuff, all the parts of this original tube was made from the same material used for the Ivory tube. For YAG laser application, the tubes should be the least penetrable and the least inflammable; hence it was concluded that the appropriate endotracheal tubes for YAG laser application was Ivory tube currently on the market, and still more desirable was our original tube.
