The growth process of overstory and understory trees in two-storied stands is described synthetically. First, the following assumption was added to the four concerning photosynthetic production and respiratory loss in pure even-aged stands : In two-storied stands with closed understory canopies, the net photosynthesis rate per unit area is constant, and it is larger than that in pure even-aged stands. Next, growth equations for tree volume v were derived as follows : <I>dυ/dt</I>=(<I>γA</I>/Σ<I>υn</I>)<I>υn-bυ</I>2/3 when the canopy is closed, <I>dυ/dt</I>=(<I>γαAVβN1-β</I>/Σ<I>υn</I>)<I>υn-bυ</I>2/3 when the canopy is open, where <I>V</I> is stand volume, <I>N</I> is stocking, <I>A</I> is a constant depending on species and site, b and β are constants depending on species, α is a constant depending on species before the first canopy closure and depends on thinnings after it ; γ is 1 for overstory trees, and it depends on the stand volume and the stocking in the overstory for understory trees. In this model, it is assumed that only the canopy of the overstory causes a growth decrease in understory trees, and parameter γ describes the degree of shading. Furthermore, assuming height growth, a method for predicting the growth in twostoried stands is proposed on the basis of the model. The method was applied to a two-storied sugi (<I>Cryptomeria japonica</I> D. DON) stand and the validity of the model was examined. Finally, the assumptions in the model are discussed.
