We studied the influence of the weeding method in the growing of planted trees, especially mechanization and laborsaving in silviculture work. Study stands were one-year-old Cryptomeria japonica D. DON and Chamaecyparis obtusa (SIEB. et ZUCC.) ENDL. plantations in the Tokyo University Forest in Chiba. Our investigations were the influence of the cutting height on the regrowth rate of susuki (Miscanthus sinensis ANDERS.), nigaichigo (Rubus microphyllus L.), fujiutsugi (Buddleja japonica HEMSLEY) and kuromoji (Lindera umbellata THUNB.) and the influence of weeds left around the planted trees. For cutting height, M. sinensis was the most sensitive to low height cutting among the four species. The lower the cutting height, the smaller was the regrowth rate. The more weeds left around the planted trees, the more the trees had the small exposure ratios of crowns. Diameter growth was more sensitive to decreases of exposure ratios than height growth, and the smaller the exposure ratio, the smaller was the diameter growth rate. The height growth rates of the planted trees on each plot affected the relationships between the amounts of weeds left around the planted trees and their exposure ratios.
