The growth process up to crown closure in a pure even-aged young stand is described synthetically in terms of stand growth and tree growth. First, the following assumptions are made: 1) The maintenance respiration rate in a stem is proportional to 2/3 power of its volume, and the construction respiration rate in a stem is propor. tional to the growth rate of its volume; 2) In a stand, the net photosynthesis rate in a tree is proportional to the n-th power of its stem volume, where n is a positive real number, and the distribution ratio of surplus production in leaves to stems is constant. Next, the analysis of measurements on plantations of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. DON) and hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtuse (SIEB. et ZUCC.) ENDL.) based on these assumptions shows the following: 1) Estimates of parameter n in the above assume tion for open young stands are smaller than those for closed stands; 2) In open young stands, logarithms of mean net assimilation per tree has a great correlation with logarithms of mean stem volume per tree. Finally, growth equations for stand volume V and tree volume v are derived as follows: dV/dt=αAVβN1-β-bS, dv/dt=(αAVβN1-β)vn-bv2/3 where N is the number of trees, A is a constant depending on species and site, b, α and β are constants depending on species. In addition, when the canopy first closes, the equation log V+(1-β)/β•logN=-logα/β holds between stand volume V and the number of trees N.
