Respiration of a seedling community of 2-year-old Chamaecyparis obtusa S. et Z. growing in the Midorigaoka Nursery at Minokamo, Gifu Prefecture, was determined semimonthly. The allometric relationship between the weight of the top part (or root part) and the height times the square of the stem diameter at one-tenth of the height was confirmed. The relationships between the respiration rates of the individual seedlings and their dry weights satisfied the power function with an exponent fairly close to unity. The regression line of the logarithmic value of the specific respiration-rate on air temperature θ has a large gradient in the lower temperature range (θ_??_13°C) as compared with a higher range. In roots, a single linearregression covered the entire temperature range. In winter, the specific respiration-rate was higher in the roots than in the tops, and new root-formation was observed. The total community respiration-rate was at a minimum from January to February and was at a maximum from August to September. The annual total respiration-loss was estimated at 1.9kg (dry matter) m-2 yr-1, of which 1.5 was consumed in the top part and 0.39 in the root system. The biomass [kg (dry wt) m-2] and the leaf area index [m2 m-2] amounted to 0.30 and 1.5, respectively, on October 6, 1981 and to 1.4 and 5.2, respectively, on October 18, 1982.
