In order to metabolize the role of the red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae THOMAS) in the energy metabolism of the ecosystem, investigations were conducted in the Nopporo Todo-fir forest, Hokkaido, for one year from 1967 to 1968 by assessing bioenergy indexes and the quantity of food consumed by voles. The resting metabolic rate of a vole can be estimated by the following formula: Y=18.24 X-0.48 (γ=-0.78) where Y: O2 consumption (ml), and X: body weight (g). The intensity of the heat production of a vole is somewhat lower in winter than in summer and is related to the environmental temperature. However, metabolism increases by 30.5 percent in a vole during their active period, even in winter. Food resources of voles were much richer on planted forest land than on natural forest land. The total annual productivity of the vole population was estimated as approximately 3, 593g/ha/year (17, 965 kcal) on planted forest land, whereas it was 1, 396g/ha/year (6, 845 kcal/ha) on natural forest land. The total food availability on planted forest reaches as much as 2, 939×103 kcal/ha (0.04 percent), whereas on natural forest it is 939×103 kcal/ha (0.05 percent). The abundance of the food supply on planted forest land for the vole population greatly exceeded that on natural forest land. Likewise, the secondary vole productivity on planted forest land is higher than such production on natural forest land. However, both planted and natural forest land food that is available to the population of voles amount to only 0.04_??_0.19 percent of the primary net production. There is a need to study the energy flow of the vole population in many forest ecosystems in order to compare the relationship of primary production (plants) and secondary production (animals) in an ecosystem with that in other ecosystems. Therefore, a synecological study on the energy flow in forests is now appropriate.
