In order to develop a computerized method for systematically laying out a forest-road network, the problems associated with its basic framing are discussed. Given a digital terrain map (DTM), the new method will make it possible to lay out a rough forest-road network for a mapped area by extending, under certain criteria, a series of line segments between any two neighboring mesh points on the DTM. In this method, data con-cerning any two mesh points and necessary to judge whether or not they can be connected as a part of the network, are stored temporarily in a two-dimen-sional storage unit within a computer, and which is termed tentatively in this paper as the "connection matrix for a forest-road-network layout (CMNL)." To clarify the conditions under which the CMNL operated effectively, an examination was made with two model areas of average slopes, 15° and 28° respectively. It revealed the following: 1) Steeper terrain resulted in a thinner network. 2) It was rea-sonable that twelve mesh points, namely half on one side in regard to the X- or Y-directions of the nearest twenty-four points surrounding any fixed point, were selected on the opposite sides, to each of which the connectivity from the fixed point was judged. 3) When the CMNL was applied to steep terrain, it was necessary to increase the maximum longitudinal gradient value considerably more than the standard value in the Japanese official forest-road regulations. However, this difficulty is hardly an obstacle for the planning of a rough forest-road-network layout.
