To investigate whether the production of Phenolic compounds in quality and quantity of the annual shoots was controlled by environmental effects or genetic factors, the annual shoots of seven clones of 4-year-old larches planted in Tomakomai and of four clones of 15-year-old larches planted in Nopporo were collected, and phenolic compounds including in the shoots were analyzed by GLC. It was found that there were few intra-clonal differences in quantity and no intra-clonal differences in quality, and that the contents of each phenolic compound were characteristic of each clone, even in different circumstances and at different ages, when annual shoots were collected at the same time in a year. To determine if the variation of phenolic compounds would be a characteristic of larch resistant to the shoot blight disease, the annual shoots of fifteen resistant clones and two susceptible clones were collected anew, and the phenolic compounds were analyzed by GLC. Though no clear correlation was found between the contents of phenolics and the disease percentages of these clones, it was sure that the clones which contained greater amounts of phenolics were always resistant ones. These results suggest the possibility of indirect selection of shoot blight resistant larches by analyzing phenolic constituents in the annual shoots of larch using GLC.
