Model experiments were undertaken to determine aggregative behaviour of nematode, Bursaphelenchus lignicolus, which cause pine wood wilting disease, to carbon dioxide. The cultured nematodes were distributed at random on agar surface in a petri dish, and gases containing various concentrations of artificial carbon dioxide were introduced onto the agar surface at the rate of 0.99_??_1.66ml/hr for one hour through a hypodermic needle set at the center of a cover. The nematodes were stimulated by the gases and moved toward the center to aggregate at the source of carbon dioxide. In experiments using dauerlarvae, the same results were obtained. However, introductions of air and gas containing more oxigen or nitrogen than air gave no remarkable change in distribution. From these experiments, it was concluded that B. lignicolus is attracted to carbon dioxide.
