Differences in the general properties of soils and forms of their nitrogen compounds were studied in two different forests, one with broad-leaved trees, and the other with Pinus densijlora mixed with broad-leaved trees. The total amount of carbon and nitrogen was greater under broad-leaved trees, and the amount of humic acid soluble in alkali after treatment with 5% HCl and its ratio against the humic acid soluble in alkali were greater in broad-leaved stands. The soils under the broad-leaved trees were characterized by their lower rates of amino acid nitrogen and higher rates of amino sugar and unknown nitrogen. Relationships between properties of the humus and the form of nitrogen suggested that the soils under broad-leaved trees contained such compounds that were much more readily decomposed by microorganisms than the soils under stands mixed with the conifer.
