Accuracy of the slope factors estimated by the digital terrain model

The accuracy of the slope factors estimated by the digital terrain model was experimentally examined, and then the optimum mesh interval for each scale was estimated utilizing the accu-racies obtained. According to various approximate methods of a slope and the various mesh intervals, the gradient, aspect and altitude were estimated, and were compared with the reference values which were measured off at each inter-section of 31×31 square mesh covered on eight different topographical maps with four different scales. The following results were obtained: 1) The approximate method of slope based on the quadratic equation was sufficient in slope estimation. Greater accuracy was not obtained even if the increased degree of estimating equation was applied. 2) The accuracies of estimating gradient, aspect and altitude increased as the distance from the estimating point to surrounding mesh points was shortened, but decreased as "the complexity of terrain" increased. 3) The errors in altitude increased almost linearly but the patterns of those in slope factors were not unique as mesh interval increased. 4) The influence in error of altitude on slope factors was apt to become larger as the mesh interval decreased. 5) Based upon these results, "the complexity of terrain" appears to be important for further study.
