The soil loss and surface run-off from the soil packed in the cases with a length of 40 cm, a width of 20 cm and a depth of 15 cm installed in the field and the laboratory were measured.According to the results of field experiments (Fig. (1)-(5)), the soil erosion on 57.7% slope by natural rains were chiefly due to the striking force of raindrops and in erosion control the cover just on the ground like forest litter were more important than the aerial part of forest like stems, branches and twigs, and leaves.According to the results of laboratory experi-ments (Fig. (6)-(10)) by the artificial rain of 100 mm (4 inches) with a intensity of 100mm (4 inches) per 1 hour, the existence of ground cover had more influence upon soil erosion than the of slope and on steep slope the erosion by surface run-off must be also considered besides the erosion by raindrops. Upon surface run-off the gradient of slope had more influence than the exsistence of ground cover and on steep slope there was scarcely any effect of forest litter. The relative meritits of needle-leaved trees and broad-leaved trees in erosion control must be precisely concluded by the results of future experiments.
