This paper attempts to show how many 'grammatical strata' exist in Japanese. A 'grammatical stratum' is defined as a set (A) of 'linguistic forms' with the following two caracteristics:
1) None of members of A includes another member of A as an immediate constituent.
2) There is no subset B of A such that every member of B includes a member (or members) of A-B and every member of A-B is included by a member (or members) of B.
A 'linguistic form' is defined as a meaningful phonological form which is both independent and integrated to more than a certain degree.
The author shows that Japanese has at least eight such strata including Sentence-stratum and Word-stratum.
