The respiratory function of the patients with chronic cervical cord injury is characterized by not only a decrease in the maximum respiratory volume but also a drop in the vital capacity and deterioration of the respiratory exchange ratio brought about by the extreme decrease in the expiratory reserve volume and in the forced expiratory volume. We performed the thorax hand-pressure or -expansion exercise on the patients with chronic cervical cord injury, aiming chiefly at the increase in the thoracic mobility. The exercises were employed 10 times a day for twelve weeks as well as the indoor-pool respiratory exercise once a week. The results obtained were; 1) the increase in the voluntary or forced vital capacity and the prolonged expiration period were obviously recognized, 2)the increase rate of the voluntary or forced vital capacity became small at the end of the exercises, and 3) FEV 1% showed almost no change throughout the exercise period. These suggest that the respiratory exercise emphasizing the increase in the thoracic mobility may play a dominant role in respiratory improvement of patients with chronic cervial cord injury.
