Several strains of polar-flagellated, gram-negative, short rod bacteria were isolated from soil and sewage. They ferment glucose, lactose, and other sugars vigorously with acid and gas production and are capable of producing a large amount of α-ketoglutaric acid in shaken cultures. After an exhaustive study from the taxonomic point of view, we have reached the conclusion that they should be assigned to a new genus in the tribe Pseudomonadeae. The generic name Kluyvera is given to this group of bacteria. A description of the new genus and descriptions of two new species of Kluyvera are presented.
