The cause of arthralgia, which was prevailing among the young female workers of a certain factory in Osaka, was epidemiologically studied with the questionnaire method. The survey was carried out twice, first in the fall of 1963, and then in May of 1964. The arthralgia attacked about 30% of the workers and localized mainly in knee joints. A close correlation between the occurrence of arthralgia and the load of attending the workshop from outside was observed, namely, the longer the time the worker should spend to go from home to the factory, or the deeper the fatigue the worker should incur from transportation, the more the chance of occurrence of arthralgia comes out. The same relationship was observed among the college girls in Kyoto, who apparently have no load of labor. It seems most reasonable to infer from the findings mentioned above that the transportation load may be one of the most important factors which give rise to knee joint pains of the workers in the factory surveyed.
