We present herewith a report on an investigation concerning the "Special Medical Examination on the Mercury Group" with cooperations of 429 workers in a clinical thermometer manufacturing factory. In the screening test, we placed great emphasis on the symptoms, among which loss of weight, oral appearance, albuminuria, sediments of urine, tremor, llong continuous headache, and insomnia were particularly worthy of special attention. In conducting detailed examinations, on the other hand, special emphasis was placed on the appearance of the specific symptoms of mercury intoxication and its progress, along with mercury quantity in the urine, general features of the urine and the blood, functions of the kidney, and serum protein fraction. The final analysis of the above examinations revealed the following facts. 1. Next to the general symptoms, change of the oral appearance occurs at an early stage. 2. Mercury quantity in the urine does not conform to the clinical symptoms. We should, however, attach much importance to the findings in urine as considered from the progress of the disease. 3. Functional disorders in the liver were not observed. 4. Significant results by on the serum protein test were not recognized.
