Similarities and differences between horizontal and vertical or bow-type continuous casting are discussed. Krupp Stahl AG decided to start experimental work with a full scale casting plant for horizontally casting high-alloy steels in 100mm square billet size. The caster uses continuous linear withdrawal and oscillating mould with coupled inductively heated tundish. The casting plant was developed by Krupp Industrietechnik GmbH and is based on several years of production and experimental experience with casting of copper and copper alloys. It is installed in a melting laboratory. The plant features and the solidification mechanism are explained and compared with the stop-and-go or the pull-push-pause-process. Results on actually cast low- and high-alloyed steels are reported.
