Many heavy-duty coating systems have been used for protecting the tidal-splash zone of offshore steel structures. Practical film properties of several types of ultra-thick coatings, among them, are examined. They are resin mortar coating, solventless epoxy coating, solventless polyurethane elastomer paint and glass flake coating, and various problems involved in the coating systems and their application techniques are discussed. It has been found that an ultra-thick, solventless epoxy coating is the best choice for offshore steel structures in view of its relatively durable film performance, even if applied in an outdoor environment.
