The levitation melting technique has been used to study metal-slag relations with regard to dephosphorization of liquid iron. The absence of side-reactions with crucible materials and the rapid heating, melting, equilibration and quenching of the metal-slag specimens are considered as the main benefits of this technique. The slag system FetO-CaO-P2O5 with or without addition of CaF2 was used to dephosphorize Fe-P specimens with initial P contents of 0.055, 0.12 and 0.20wt% and temperatures of 1650 and 1700°C. Final phosphorus contents in the metal and partition ratios (% P2O5)/[% P] are given as related to slag composition. Results are compared with previous data obtained for similar slags saturated with CaO or 4CaO•P2O5.
