The previous unexplained results from a model hearth study have been investigated in more detail using the newly developed mini probes to obtain local flow information for inclusion in the analysis also. The actual results involved the residence time theory and RTD methods. It is shown that the presence of different packing region in the hearth alters the residence time distribution, causes the appearance of second Xp point and splits the flow pattern of the injected tracer. It is also shown that the results from tuyere injections cannot distinguish between a coke free layer in the hearth and a coke free gutter at the hearth periphery. An example of the application of the results and the methods of RTD analysis in practice is also included.
