Development of Learning Contents for Intercultural Understanding:A Case of the Learning of Indonesian Life Culture

The concept of international understanding includes all variegated aspects such as Unesco activities, environments, international relations, human rights, ethnicity and different cultures. In this paper, however, the emphasis is placed on intercultural understanding, since the scope concerned is not too wide as in the case of international understanding, which fact would in turn result in easier classroom teaching.The author conducted an experimental teaching at the Kagawa University Takamatsu Junior High School, which is a quite high level one, and also at the Furutakamatsu Junior High School as an example of ordinary public schools. Teaching materials were taken from Indonesian cultural traits such as ani-ani (rice-ear pickers) and beca (bicycle-driven three-wheeled rikisha), both are widely used in Indonesia. After 50-minutes class teaching, the following results were obtains: for the location of Indonesia, right answer ratio was 60%-80% for the former and the latter school respectively; for the distinction of Sumatra from Java, again 60%-80%. Relation between house types and precipitation and relation between house types and ethnic groups showed right answer ratio of 60%-90%. The meaning of the ubiquitous use of ani-ani in Javanese society and some other places seems to have been understood relatively well as shown by the ratio of 60-70%. Again for the mutual help systems among beca drivers, the same ratio of 60%-70% was obtained.The results obtained should lead to the conclusion that this kind of teaching method by using the above-mentioned teaching materials is quite appropriate for the first grade pupils in junior high schools. It is better for the teacher to pay more attention to different cultures in the framework of social structure.
