Effect of Mixing Condition on Damping Property in a Nylon 6/MXD 6 Blend

The morphology of a 80/20 nylon 6/MXD 6 blend prepared by melt mixing using a twin screw co-extruder was investigated using a light microscope, a polarized microscope, light scattering and X-ray diffraction. By mixing at a low temperature (250°C) and a low shear rate (screw speed of 100rpm), the as-extruded blend was opaque and the system was observed to be heterogeneous in a order of 1μm. The opaque heterogeneous blend became transparent during annealing at 250°C.The change in morphology, resulting from adjustment to the mixing condition, had hardly any effect on the damping properties of the blends.
