EFFECT OF PANAX GINSENG ON THE GROWTH AND SEXUAL FUNCTION IN RAT

Powder of <I>Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer</I> was orally given to rats in a daily dose of 0.10.2g for 61 consecutive days from 35 to 96 days of age.<BR>There was no remarkable change in growth of either male or female rats, nor was observed any noticeable difference in vaginal opening, the first estrus, and the succeeding sexual cycle between experimental and control females. After sacrifice, organs (hypophysis, thyroid, submaxillar gland, thymus, adrenal, spleen, heart, liver, kidney, testis, epididymis, prostate, seminal vesicle, M. levator ani, ovary and uterus) from all the animals were weighed and further subjected to detailed histological investigation, but without any remarkable change.<BR>Next, adult female rats were subcutaneously injected for 8 days with 10 mg/day of methanol extract of <I>Panax ginseng</I>, purified ginseng sapogenin, and their effects on body weight and sexual cycle were investigated, but without any remarkable change.<BR>Nor could the weighing and histological investigation of organs find any noticeable change.
