Bacterial degradation of pine and beech lignin sulf onates was studied by stationary culture of Pseudomonas ovalis for period up to 60 days.<BR>Lignin sulf onates were decomposed slightly by this bacterium compared with kraft lignin. Biodegraded lignin sulfonates included only small amounts of nitrogen which derived from protein and nucleic acid of the bacterial cells.<BR>However, vanillin and syringaldehyde producing groups in the biodegraded lignin samples decreased.<BR>p-Hydroxy benzonate and 4-methoxy isophthalic acid producing groups by the permanganate oxidation of pine lignin sulfonate increased with progress of biodegradation. However, methoxyl group and phenolic hydroxyl group decreased. Those facts suggest that demethoxylation was caused for the relatively long incubation period by this strain.<BR>Consequently, although it is very small extent, biodegradation of lignin sulfonates was observed to progress in a similar manner to the case of kraft lignin.<BR>Sulfonic acid group in the samples increased for the incubation period.
