Thrust force generates externally at the bend of pipeline due to internal pressure. In the current design, this thrust force is supported by the concrete block at the pipe bend. However, such heavy concrete block becomes a weak point during earthquake due to inertia. In addition, it induces the local settlement in soft ground. Therefore, lightweight thrust protecting method is required. The authors have proposed the new lightweight method using geogrid and clarified the effect in previous studies.In this paper, image analyses for ground surface in model tests were conducted and numerical analyses by distinct elemental method (DEM) were carried out in order to examine the resistant mechanism on this new method. As the result, it is found that the unification of soil mass between the model pipe and the plate contributes to resistance. In addition, it is clear that the interval between the pipe and the plate is important factor to resist thrust force.
