We examined the relationship between moisture of the oral mucosa and salivary flow rate in patients with dry mouth. The subjects were 27 patients (3 males and 24 females, ranging from 34 to 87 years of age, with an average age of 58.4 years) and 25 healthy volunteers (14 males and 11 females, ranging from 18 to 87 years of age, with an average age of 48.8 years). We measured the moisture of four sites of oral mucosae, i. e., tongue, buccal mucosa, lower lip, and palatal mucosa, by means of a moisture meter (MY01, SCALAR®). The salivary flow rate was measured by means of the chewing gum test and the Saxon test. Moisture values of oral mucosae were statistically lower than those in healthy volunteers at each of the 4 sites mentioned above. A low salivary flow rate against the standard level was observed only in 33.3% of patients by the chewing gum test, and in 63% of patients by the Saxon test. There was no significant correlation between moisture of the oral mucosa and salivary flow rates either by the chewing gum test or the Saxon test. The rate of moisture decrease at the tongue was significantly higher than that at other sites.
