Effects of soybean oligosaccharides intake (1 or 2g/day as stachyosetrafinose) for 2 weeks on defecation, fecal microflora and fecal moisture were studied in 18 healthy volun-teers. Defecation frequency and the number of Bifidobacterium in those with low frequency of evacuation significantly (p<0.01) increased, but not in those who had more than six times a week of bowel movements, nor did the fecal moisture increase during the period of intake. Small amount of soybean oligosaccharides was shown to improve fecal characteristics of those with constipation tendency.
