A questionnaire on health conditions, food intake and personal characters (Yatabe-Guilford Personality Inventory) was carried out among 37 business bachelors in Kanazawa City. They were divided into two groups by the duration of life away from family and compared in respect of nutrient intake, personal character and health problems. The results are as follows.1) Businessmen who had lived away from families for less than three years caught cold more easily than those living alone longer than three years (p<0.05).2) When the two groups were compared, those living alone for more than three years took all kinds of nutrients except vitamin A than the other group. When analyzed based on the food groups, the latter particularly did not take green-yellow vegetables (p<0.05).3) Those who answered that they easily caught cold were found more frequently among emotionally unstable persons and those with positive personality than among emotionally stable persons or those who had the average or negative personality (p<0.05).4) In respect of nutrient intake and intake by the food group, intakes of iron and vegetables as well as of calcium, vitamin C and beans were significantly low in those with emotionally unstable character. As for the positive type, their intake of fat was higher, that of yellow and green vegetables significantly lower and that of vitamin C also low when compared to those with ordinary or negative character.5) The analysis results showed that emotionally stabilizing factors influencing personality were calcium, iron, beans and vegetables, and lipids, vitamin C, milk products and green-yellow vegetables were related to extroversive-introversive factors.
