Clinical Results of Local Hyperthermia with Thermotron RF-8 for the Treatment of Prostatic Carcinoma and Prostatic Hyperplasia.

The radiofrequency capacitive hyperthermia with Thermotron RF-8 was used for the treatment of prostate carcinoma and prostate hyperplasia.<BR>The subjects were 8 patients of prostatic carcinoma and 3 cases of prostatic hyperplasia at the Department of Urology Nagoya City University Medical School between July 1987 and August 1990.<BR>In the prostatic carcinoma group, the pathological diagnosis by needle biopsy was squamous cell carcinoma in one of the 8 patients and adenocarcinoma in 7. The clinical stage was T3 in 4 patients and T4 in 4. Hyperthermia was given once weekly, 2 to 10 times in total, by using a Thermotron RF-8. Radiation was used in combination with hyperthermia in 6 patients, and hormone drugs were administered to 7 patients except a patient with squamous cell carcinoma.<BR>In the prostatic hyperplasia group, hyperthermia was given to each patients 2 to 6 times.<BR>Hyperthermia resulted in PR in 5 of the 8 patients with prostatic cancer, MR in 2 and NC in one. Two of them are dead, and 5 surviving. The survival period ranged between one and 5 months.<BR>Improvement of dysuria and reduction in the prostate were achieved in all 3 patients with prostatic hyperplasia.<BR>As side effects, hyperthermia caused mild burns in one patient and fat induration in 3, but no serious conditions.<BR>Therefore, local hyperthermia with Thermotron RF-8 is very useful for the treatment of prostatic carcinoma and prostatic hyperplasia. However, examination of the prognosis of prostatic cancer necessitates a long-term followup, and patients with prostatic hyperpalasia must be followed up determine whether the reduction in the prostate is transient or permanent.
