Five patients were treated by the combination of chemotherapy and hyperthermia. BSD-1000 system was used for heating. All of them were inoperable or post-operative recurrent cancar cases. One surgically resected colonic cancer case and autopsied specimens in 4 patients were examined histopathologically. Hyperthermo-chemotherapy induced the possibility of surgical resection of the primary tumor in one of the patients with colonic cancer. The resected specimen revealed peculiar feature. Carcinoma was not found in the mucosa but infiltration of carcinoma was observed in the muscle layer. Four autopsied cases had huge tumors with a large necrotic mass. When heated tumor was compared with non- heated metastatic tumor, the heated tumor showed a vascular changes such as medial necrosis of the arterioles and occlusion by thrombus of small vessels and inflammatory cell infiltration even in the region showing a similar extent of necrosis as nonheated tumor. Although reduction of tumor size was not observed in the autopsied patients, tumor was resulted in considerable necrosis with remained surrounding carcinoma cells. Histopathological study may be necessary for evaluation of the effect of the hyperthermo-chemotherapy.
1) Hyperthrmo-chemotherapy induced the possibility of surgical resection of the primary tumor in one of the patients with inoperable colonic cancer and resected specimen examined histopathologically.
2) Heated tumors were compared with non- heated metastasized tumors histopathologically at autopsied specimens in 4 patients with advanced or recurrent cancers.
3) Heated tumor showed a extensive necrosis and there were no remained carcinoma cells.
4) Heated tumor showed a vascular changes such as occlusion by fibrinous thrombus of small vessels and it suggested that vascular changes became causes of extensive necrosis of the tumor.
5) In cases with deep seated huge tumors, although reduction of tumor size were not observed, tumor were resulted in considerable necrosis with remained surrounding carcinoma cells and it is necessary to improve on chemotherapy for remained carcinoma cells.
6) Not only tumor reduction on CT and US but also histopathological study may be necessary evaluation of the effect of hyperthermo-chemotherapy.
