The distribution of Sphaeromatidae (Crustacea; Isopoda) according to salinity was investigated in May 1996 at Lake Shinji (area; 79.2 km2, max. depth; 6m, peripheral; 48km), an oligo-haline lake in Shimane Pref., Japan. Three species of sphaeromatid, Chitonosphaera lata, Gnorimosphaeroma naktongense and G. chinense were found along the shore of the lake. Electric conductivity of 7-8 mS cm-1 around the outlet of the Oohashi River at the east side of the lake de-creased to 1-3 mS cm-1 toward the west side, where the Hii River flows in. Maximum densities of G. naktongense, G. chinense and C. lata were 58.7 indi. m-2 at Sta.12, 22.7 indi. m-2 at Sta. 18 and 389 indi. m-2 at Sta. 18, respectively. A high frequency of the appearance of C. later was observed on the east side of the lake showing high electric conductivity, whereas that of G. naktongense was abundant on the west side with low electric conductivity. G. chinense appeared at a high rate in the moderate values of electric conductivity of the lake.
